No bull! A Great Night for Deadly Choices Youth

A group of around 20 Cairns youth from the Deadly Choices program enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Australia event at the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday, July 18.

The event offered the kids a unique opportunity to learn about the many roles and skills involved in making a bull riding competition exciting and safe.

Led by Shantal Daniel, Wuchopperen Health Service’s Deadly Choices Program Officer, and Mercedes Hudson-Nona from Wuchopperen’s Family and Wellbeing team, the children toured various stations throughout the venue.

They experienced hands-on activities such as learning how to rope like the cowboys, understanding the lighting and commentary setup, and even getting a chance to walk around with the camera crew.

The group also met the protection athletes, formerly known as rodeo clowns, who play a vital role in rider safety. To top it off, the kids enjoyed riding a mechanical bull and practiced opening the gates for riders entering the arena.

A highlight of the day was meeting award-winning country singer and Australian Idol finalist, Hayley Jensen, with whom the children collaborated on writing a song. They also relaxed in a chill-out zone with Deadly Choices Ambassador Edrick Lee from the Dolphins NRL team, sharing their dreams and favourite parts of the program.

The experience concluded on a high note with each child receiving complimentary tickets to attend the PBR event on Saturday night to watch the bull riding action live.

“This event was a fantastic chance for the kids to see the teamwork and dedication behind PBR and to inspire them to pursue their own goals,” said Shantal Daniel. “We are proud to provide these experiences that combine education, culture, and fun in a supportive environment.”
