Wuchopperen Health Service Hosts Successful Deadly Choices Community Day

Wuchopperen Health Service proudly hosted the Deadly Choices Great Community Day, bringing together over 100 community members for a fun-filled afternoon of activities and engagement. The event featured games and sports for all ages, fostering a strong sense of community spirit.

Children had the opportunity to meet players from the Northern Pride Rugby League team, participating in games and rugby drills that kept them active and entertained. Meanwhile, the Elders enjoyed a dedicated gathering tent, providing a space for important discussions and connection within the community.

Participants attending on the day, contributed to the community art piece “Collective Journeys”, a collaborative art piece reflecting the differing journeys we all take, but we are all united on our journey through culture. This art piece project was led by Deadly Choices program office Evie Evernden.

Attendees also took part in the Deadly Choices Tackling Indigenous Smoking Survey, with over 80 surveys completed during the event. Each participant was entered into a draw for two tickets to the upcoming North Queensland Cowboys versus Gold Coast Titans match on April 26 at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Indianna Tillett, Wuchopperen’s Deadly Choices program coordinator, expressed her excitement about the turnout and community engagement.

“There were kids running everywhere. Having the players from the Northern Pride really helped. The kids love their footy and loved the chance to catch up with the players,” she stated.

Tillett noted the success of the event, highlighting the popularity of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking display.

“The opportunity to go in the draw for tickets to the Cowboys home game later this month has proved very successful.

“Our Tackling Indigenous Smoking display was popular, with many surveys completed, and a good percentage indicating that they wanted assistance in quitting smoking,” she added.

Tillett also expressed gratitude towards the Northern Pride team, saying, “I want to thank Elianna Suluvale, Steph Mooka (Northern Pride Women’s BMD Squad) and Tesharne Kapigeno (Northern Pride Men’s HPC Squad) for helping to make this event so successful.”
