Free BreastScreen Service at Wuchopperen

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women aged 50 and over are invited to Wuchopperen for a free, preventative breast check.

The BreastScreen Queensland Mobile Service truck will be parked at Wuchopperen from Monday 22 January to Thursday 25 January, with the BreastScreen team hoping to see 100 women over the four days.

BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Belinda Lees said the mobile screening service made it easier for women to access preventative screenings.

‘Breast screens are fast, free, and friendly and provided by our all-female team,’ she said.

‘We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women aged over 50 to take advantage of this free service, as the risk of breast cancer increases with age.  Women in their 40s are also eligible for the free service.’

One in eight women in Australia will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life. While the causes of breast cancer aren’t known, a regular two-yearly breast screen is the best way to find breast cancer in its earliest stages for better health outcomes.

Wuchopperen Women’s, Children and Maternal Health Acting Manager Marion Norrie said appointments were filling fast.

‘I encourage new and existing clients to ring Wuchopperen on 4080 1000 to make an appointment for a breast screen, or fill out a request form at the Women’s, Children and Maternal Health clinic,’ she said.

‘Breast screening is one of the best things you can do to look after your health, and, by extension, look after those who need you.’
