Wuchopperen Health Service Limited provided free flu vaccinations to the residents and staff of Kuiyam Aboriginal Hostel in Cairns on Friday 4 May.
Wuchopperen is running a flu vaccination outreach campaign during May in a bid to reduce the incidence of the potentially deadly seasonal illness.
Kuiyam Hostel, which caters for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families experiencing homelessness, requested the service on behalf of their clients.
Hostel Manager Jacinta Savage, who received her flu shot along with nearly 30 residents, said the event was a success.
‘People were happy to come and get their free flu shot – we had a great turn out,’ she explained.
‘They know that vaccination helps prevent serious illness and were very grateful to Wuchopperen for visiting Kuiyam Hostel and providing this service.’
Wuchopperen Director Medical Services Dr Jacki Mein encouraged everyone in the community, particularly those in contact with the very young or very old, to get a flu vaccination before winter hits.
